THE GERSHWIN THEATER, NEW YORK CITY

“I don’t understand why you’re so nervous. You didn’t have nerves like this when you were performing rock to eighty thousand people at Wembley Stadium,” Matt whispered into his lover’s ear. “And you’re not even performing tonight. You’re just the composer.”

“I’m going to get creamed by the critics,” Jay replied, his voice a hissing stage whisper. “They never like it when old gay rockers write musicals.”

Matt snorted derisively. “You’re not old. You’ll only be thirty-eight tomorrow. You don’t even have a gray hair. And what the fuck does being gay have to do with anything? You can’t tell me the critics don’t like gay men who write musicals. I thought gay and musicals went together like PB and J?”

Jay eyed his lover of twenty years. Matt had a cocky grin on his handsome face. His green eyes glittered with excitement and amusement. Jay bit back a sigh. He couldn’t even have normal opening night nerves. Matt’s presence at his side just leached them away. His lips twitched and within moments he found himself smiling back at Matt.

“See? The nerves are gone now, aren’t they?” Matt’s big hand squeezed Jay’s knee through the expensive material of his tuxedo trousers.

“You dick. You did that on purpose.”

Matt’s grin widened. “Of course, I did. What else am I supposed to do when my partner starts eating himself up with nerves?” He stroked his palm up the inside of Jay’s thigh in a suggestive manner. “Besides, you know you like it when I tease you out of your bad moods.”

“Being nervous isn’t a bad mood. It’s expected on opening night.”

“Ahem. If you’re a performer, it’s expected. You’re not performing any more. You have no excuse.”

Jay grabbed Matt’s hand before it wandered into dangerous territory. “I only perform for you.”

“Thank God. I waited eight years for you to come home while you got the performing thing out of your system. That was long enough.” Matt leaned over and dropped a kiss on Jay’s lips. “I’m not complaining though. Your yen to make music has given us a good life. Those eight years were an investment in our future.”

Jay turned in his seat and grabbed Matt’s hands. He stared into the green eyes he loved more than anything in the world and decided to tell Matt a secret that he’d kept for nearly twenty years.

“You realize that we needed the time apart for other reasons too.” He heaved a sigh. “I know I never said it and you never did either, but we both needed to experience more of life. That would never have happened had we stayed together, cocooned in our love. I needed to leave our sleepy little town and see the world. I needed to experience things that I never would have gotten to experience had I stayed home with you. I needed to leave in order to grow. And I seriously needed to get the performing bug out of my system.”

Matt touched Jay’s face gently, tracing his jaw.
